Fox Hunting in America is rooted in longstanding tradition, going back as far as the 1700’s. Through the years, the etiquette and guidelines have evolved to preserve the tradition of the sport, the safety of hounds, horses, and riders, as well as to show gratitude and respect to landowners, who so graciously allow us to hunt across their property.
The introduction which follows, hopes to serve as a brief overview of the rules and guidelines when hunting with Holston Hounds. Together we look forward to building good sport, camaraderie, and excitement.
Our Pack:
The Holston Hounds are mostly Penn-Marydel Foxhounds, known for endurance, scenting ability and an unparalleled deep voice. The goal is to watch hounds work and to enjoy the thrill of the chase until the fox/coyote safely goes to ground and survives to be chased another day.
Hunting in the Field - Options for Everyone
• First Flight goes quickly (walk, trot, canter, and gallop) and jumps both natural and constructed obstacles built into the fence lines to stay with hounds.
• Second Flight goes as quickly as First, except riders go through gates instead of jumping.
• Third Flight goes slower than First or Second but still goes at a walk or trot, or frequently a canter and is often referred to as “Hilltopping.”
